Plantsmans Corner; New Shoots 4
What can I say? Number four from the Next Generation....Pottager, Cuttings, divisions, and a cruelly hung pepper plant among this episodes selection.
For any Trekies amongst viewers, Thomas is definitely a Deanna/Worf love child.....while George certainly has Riker in the gene pool somewhere......

Tim & Austins Garden
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.21 день назад
Another garden visit. This time to Tim & Austin at Millgate House Bed & Breakfast. I've know them as customers for many years now, and it is growing plants for passionate and enthusiastic gardeners that makes a nurserymans life, which can be hard and very frustrating, seem far more worthwhile beyond the necessity to just make a living.

A Covid interrupted month this time. Just a look at some plants, some seed ideas for the future, a dead fish and another look at propagating delphinium crown buds in a simple home situation rather than on a nursery....and a bit on turning. I may do a video on making a bowl some time over winter but its not really gardening.....maybe when there's not much else going on. I'd like to wish all my r...

    Hey Malcom, how's it going? In this episode, you show a tallish lavenderish perennial, right after the varigated physocarpus. I couldn't catch the name. I think it’s something Fusilli(?). Would you mind spelling it for me? I'd like to try to get a hold of it. Thank you!

      Hello Matt…..the plant is ‘Dactylorhiza fuchsii’…..it’s commonly known as the common spotted orchid and is quite widespread throughout the British isles. It is very similar to Dactylorhiza maculata, and the ones I have may be a hybrid of the two, it’s hard to say because I’ve grown both and have been fortunate enough to have seedlings over the years…..but they are very similar, I just think it’s more similar to pure fuchsii. I don’t know where you are in the world Matt, but you should find a supplier somewhere easy enough. They are not difficult to grow and are fully hardy….they even sow themselves into other pots of plants occasionally on the nursery, often their worth more than the plant they’ve colonised! But they never become a pest or invasive. They clump up over time and you can lift and divide off shoots as they emerge in spring….pot them up into 9cm pots and grow on for a year. Hope this helps…..best wishes….Malcolm

    Here in Western Australia we're seriously battling chilli thrip. The wee uckers decimate chillis, capsicums and roses and more. I've seen people giving up after major chemical warfare and ripping whole rose gardens out, some over 50 yrs old (personally meh but the gardeners are understandably devastated). I hope the ones sited on your plants are just aphids. 3 yrs now I've lost my pepper harvests and am considering this spring of giving up and buying them instead 😭 An enjoyable education as always and we both decided that Malcolm would be Onslo 😂

    I love the fact it's called "how to run a nursery," and Malcom complains about a customer being there! This stuff is so real!!! When I worked in a nursery and didn't want to be bothered by customers, I would pick up a hose and pretend to be watering in the farthest corner of the nursery 😂

    • @plantsmanscorner128
      @plantsmanscorner128 12 дней назад

      @@mattszalwinski6869 it’s an English accent thing Matt. George said ‘poorly’ I, having grown up in the south pronounce the ‘oo’ as if saying the word ‘or’……here in the north they pronounce it as if saying the word ‘loo’……they all do it….Lisa, Thomas, Helen, and especially Elizabeth…….another example is they say ‘Oop’ whereas most civilised folk say ‘up’ 😂….it is a linguistic shift known scientifically as “The Great Vowel Shift”……..but there are so many variations within regions…..Elizabeth’s Yorkshire accent I find hard to understand…..whereas Geordie (Newcastle) is utterly indecipherable for me……But if you listen to rural Berkshire or Oxfordshire that also is like an alien language. If you’ve ever watched Gerald on Clarksons farm you’d see a good example of a rural southern accent……most though, particularly in the north see southern as meaning posh. Hope that helps Matt…Best wishes….Malcolm

      @plantsmanscorner128 Hey Malcom, thanks for the explanation. I was just busting George's chops a bit😁. Trust me, I have NO room to talk when it comes to accents! I'm from Philly, here in Pennsylvania, where we say WOODER, instead of WATER, and of course YOUZ, instead of YOU. All that aside, I have to tell you how AWESOME your episodes are! I worked in three nurseries in my teens and twenties. I still have gardening in my blood! I love nothing better than to ho out back and prune, transplant, and divide perennials!! Your tip on notching under the bud to prevent vertical growth and promote horizontal growth was EXCELLENT! I really enjoyed it and the demo with the drilled holes in the hose, or water pipe, as you guys call it, was fantastic! Thanks so much for putting this material up on RUclips!

    There are so many levels to meander through. The amount of varieties of plants astounds me. The only concern is the pathways and safety when the moss and algae start to grow. A few nice old filigree fences or gates would be helpful as you step down. The ferns, pines and hostas are amazing. That variegated ceanothus will look beautiful when in flower. It probably won't get as big as most due to the Leaf size but it will be a show stopper. A few sun loving hostas or small bulbs infront, would fill in the gaps. I've made mine I to a tree form over the years, as they tend to grow in a fan shape and I've densely planted some NZ native ground covers as well as Michaelmas daisies that are variegated to...also a passion fruit vine is growing through it. Lovely garden to peruse and even do some sketching or painting. Thankyou very much for the opportunity to view your unforgettable garden.Jo.

    One of their ferns looks similar to our sensitive fern here in the southeast US which is invasive. I try to rid my place of it weekly. The more I eradicate it the more it comes back. Also, I think the maple in question is indeed 'sangu kaku'. You really can't go by the leaves because they vary so much. I am going to agree with Austin and say it is 'sangu kaku'...my 'Beni kawa ' grows up, rather than out, and is more red than bright orange. They are all very similar although 'Japanese sunrise' is over rated in my opinion.
